PhD Student Positions

Ph.D Positions in Cognitive Neuroscience of Addiction

We are seeking highly motivated Ph.D students to join our lab, working on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying substance use and addiction. Projects are embedded within an experimental and translational framework, integrating behavioral, neurocognitive, psychophysiological, and neuroimaging approaches.

Available Research Lines:

  • Neural Markers of Vulnerability to Substance Use: research on neurobehavioral variability in reward and control processes underlying vulnerability to substance misuse and addiction.

  • Neuroimaging signatures and Addiction Risk: research on brain activation and functional connectivity alterations underlying addiction risk and reward dysregulation.

  • Psychophysiological Signatures of Addiction: research on psychophysiological mechanisms of vulnerability to inform targeted prevention and personalized interventions.

  • Neuromodulation of Reward Circuits in Addiction: research on neuromodulation of reward processing to enhance abstinence and reduce relapse risk in addiction.

  • Addiction Treatment and Relapse Prevention: research on neurocognitive and biobehavioral predictors of treatment response and relapse to optimize treatment of addiction.

Training and Research Environment:

Ph.D students will receive advanced training in cognitive neuroscience and translational addiction research, with emphasis on:

  • EEG/ERP acquisition and analysis
  • Functional neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI) and connectivity analyses
  • Psychophysiological and hormonal assessment
  • Computational data analysis and statistical modeling

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuroscience, or related fields
  • Strong interest in addiction and cognitive neuroscience
  • Interest in working with neurophysiological EEG/ERPs, fMRI, and/or psychophysiological measures
  • Basic statistics skills and/or programming (R, Python, or MATLAB)
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)

How to Apply: Applications should be submitted through the ISPA–Instituto Universitário doctoral admissions office. Please indicate Dr. Jorge Martins as your prospective supervisor.

Application Deadline: Early May each year.
